Gorgie City Farm

Be A Farmer

Farmers' Helpers

This is our 10th year of Farmers' Helpers (formerly known as "So You Want To Be A City Farmer")!
We started with just a few days as part of the Science Festival and the provision has increased to its current level over the period due to demand increasing. Farmers' Helpers now runs during every school holiday except Xmas, 10 weeks per year in total.

The idea is that on holiday weekday mornings you 8-12 year-olds can come along, get stuck in and do real farm jobs.
You might be taking the cow up to the field then mucking out her pen in the stable, or collecting eggs then cleaning out a henhouse and filling up the hens' water. Learn how to look after animals, have fun and make new friends. Many young people go on to join our Saturday morning Young City Farmers Club, or become volunteers.

Booking is essential and as early as possible is recommended especially if you are looking for 2 or more spaces a day. (There are occasionally still spaces/ cancellations a few days before though, just ask!) The fee of £7 per session in 2010 is payable in advance. Contact the Education Officer for more details/ to book.

Times are 10.00-12.30 each weekday.
Wear old clothes, shoes or wellies, bring gloves and a snack/drink.

Young Farmers Club

Learn to look after farm animals and birds, do real farm jobs, occasionally visit other places of farming and animal interest and make new friends!
For 8-12 year-olds, the club meets every third/ fourth Saturday morning (number of sub groups depends on demand to a maximum of 4 groups) 10.00-12.30.
An annual charge is made- likely to be £35 for 2009-10. It runs during school term time.

Contact Young Farmers Club Co-ordinator for details.
