Producing Food
Farmers do the same farm jobs at about the same time each year. If you want lambs in Spring you have to put your ram in to mate with the ewes in Autumn. Pigs breed all year round. We put eggs in the incubator to hatch them just before Easter, hen's eggs take 3 weeks to hatch. For the rest of the year we sell our eggs. Vegetables and cereals like wheat are mostly planted in Spring and harvested in Autumn although some spend the Winter in the soil.
In our fields we grow grass for the animals to eat. Gorgie Farm is not able to grow enough food for all its stock (animals) so we have to buy hay (dried grass) and cereal food from feed suppliers or other farmers. We pay for this by selling our animals and eggs, manure and wool. We also buy straw for bedding from other farms
