Gorgie City Farm

What is Here?

Why we are here and the animals we have.

Gorgie City Farm is a child-friendly working farm on a 1 hectare site with little fields and stables, styes and poultry- and sheep-houses. We have a horse, cow, goats, sheep, pigs, hens, turkeys and ducks, also an owl and a pussy cat!

Wild Birds

This summer, the Farm participated in the RSPB's annual Farm Bird Survey. RSPB volunteers did four early morning "spots." And all in all, 19 species were recorded. Not bad for a small urban green space!rspb logo

Of those 19 species, 6 are deemed to be of "conservation concern:" Herring Gull; House Sparrow; Starling; Dunnock; Lesser black-backed gull; and Swift.

Over the coming months, the Farm hopes to work closely with the RSPB to improve wild bird habitats - especially those of birds of "conservation concern." This will mean providing additional food, especially in breeding season. And planting specific plants and flowers.

Pet Lodge

Mr.Murdoch the female tortoise. There's more! In our 'Pet Lodge' building you'll see rabbits, guinea pigs, gerbils, doves, budgies and other pet birds, a snake, chinchillas, stick insects and even fish and tortoises!
Teenage volunteers take the 'Mobile Pets' out to visit schools and nursing homes, board pets while their owners go on holiday and provide pet care information for visitors.

Cafe & Playpark

Jemima's Pantry' is the city farm's own cafe, selling snacks and drinks and hot meals over lunchtime. You can eat outdoors in good weather.

Next to the cafe is the farm Playpark, which has a range of play equipment for the under-11's and a picnic area.

.Produce

The farm is an oasis in the heart of the city, with herb, sensory, wildlife, vegetable and education gardens to enjoy. A Produce Stall sells our own harvest, plus bought-in fruit and veg.

Our ambition is to educate everyone who comes through the gates even if it's just from reading a sign or label!
Volunteers learn new skills, craft classes are held, guided tours for school classes and other groups are offered, holiday activities and a young farmers club for children are very popular. Our Education Centre can be found at the end of the stable block. .

Children's birthday parties (with horse rides optional!), room hire for meetings, sales of farm stuff such as straw, hay and manure, there's lots going on down on Gorgie Farm! Contact Us to see how we can help you.
