Young Garden Volunteers

Got green fingers? Or keen to develop them? Well, we're looking for young volunteers to help out in the Garden on Sunday afternoons from 1pm till 4pm. You'll learn how to grow your own fruit, veg and flowers. And get to eat the produce of your labours. Keen to know more? Email the Orra Woman

.

Young Farm Volunteers

To be a volunteer at Gorgie City farm you must be 13 years of age. This is the law.
Volunteers help run the farm by looking after the animals and poultry (birds) and doing any other jobs needing done. You will have a member of staff to teach you what to do and supervise you.

There is a long waiting list. Volunteering on the farm is very popular.
(If you wish a one-off experience eg for Guiding / Scouting challenges then Farmer's Helpers would be suitable and is usually more available.)

To apply to be a volunteer, write to 'Volunteering', Gorgie City Farm, 51 Gorgie Road, Edinburgh, EH11 2LA, or telephone 0131 337 4202, or email volunteering _AT_ gorgiecityfarm.org.uk, or call in and ask for an application form.
When you apply you will be added to the waiting list - please be patient! In time you will be asked to come along for induction training (half a day usually; email is the default invite medium if provided, otherwise post), after which you can put your name down on the rota to come and work at the farm. You'll usually sign up to work, say half a day a month, volunteering is popular and we'd like lots of people to get a chance!

John Muir Trust Award / Duke of Edinburgh's Award ? wanting to do service? Apply in the same way as for volunteering, mentioning it's for JMTA/DoEA is helpful (also if you would be likely to continue beyond the award).
(Please note though no preference is given with regard to waiting time and all volunteers have the same access to the rota and limits; the expectation (and aim when setting induction levels) is that you will able to book such that your average will satisfy award conditions.)

As at June 2010 demand is such that summer inductions are full- apologies to those applying May or later for not being able to accomodate you. The next intake is expected to be the Christmas holidays, sooner if we can (this depends on level of use of rota, number of folk continuing to volunteer etc.).
