Volunteers are very important to us at Gorgie City Farm. People volunteer for lots of different reasons, from wishing to gain work experience in preparation for employment or as part of accreditation for courses at college or university, to those looking to use their spare time constructively in the local community.
Many of our opportunities involve hands-on work with our animals or visiting children, but we also need help answering telephones and admin work in the Farm Offices, and we run gardening groups too. We hope there will be something to appeal to everyone who wants to help.
If you are part of a company, corporate group or organisation who would like to volunteer for a day please go to our Corporate Groups page.
We have volunteers at the farm 7 days a week. At weekends we run our youth rota for young people aged 13-18, so if you are a young person in this age group looking for weekend volunteering, please get in touch on email@example.com.
We also provide opportunities for supported young people aged between 13 and 18 years old to volunteer during the week with our small animals or our large animals and poultry, and also in our gardening groups on a Wednesday and Thursday. Our supported young people may be at risk of social isolation due to disability, having difficulties at home, or struggling to engage with school. Our young volunteers are referred by schools, referral agents, family members and carers, and occasionally themselves. We would welcome a chat with you if you would like to discuss this area of our work further. Please note that there is very high demand for these volunteering roles.
To discuss referring a young person to our weekday supported volunteering programme, please get in touch on firstname.lastname@example.org, or telephone on 0131 337 4202, for a chat.
We take on mainly volunteers with support needs at the farm. We offer a weekday Large Animals and Poultry Assistant role, where volunteers are offered a set time each week, either morning or afternoon (though times can be reduced to suit the individual volunteering). We also take on volunteers for similar length sessions with our small animals at the Pet Lodge. There are also gardening groups on Wednesdays or Thursdays from 10am – 12.30pm.
For volunteers without support needs, there are Education roles assisting with tours and workshops for children of varying ages, from 5 upwards, and a holiday club running on weekday mornings.
There are also Admin roles and Maintenance roles on the farm.
We are lucky enough to find that there is a high rate of interest in all our volunteer roles! However, we would be delighted to hear from you if you are keen to get involved. If you are interested in enquiring, please get n touch on email@example.com, and we can advise you further.
We offer these all year round with the larger livestock and poultry, and during holiday periods only with the small animals. Most weeks are allocated on a first come first served basis and with a limit per person applying. During holidays, priority is given to those aged over 15 and adults. During term-time at least half our spaces will be allocated to school pupils.
Please contact us directly via firstname.lastname@example.org or telephone 0131 337 4202- to organise these placements.
